The Sixth Patriarch, the Venerable Miccaka, was a native of Central India. His clan name is unknown. One day he went to a kingdom of Northern India. In the marketplace, a man holding a wine vessel encountered the Patriarch and said, 'From what direction has the Venerable One come? Where do you wish to go?' The Patriarch said, 'I come from my own mind; I wish to go to no place.' [The man] said, 'Do you know the thing in my hand?' The Patriarch said, 'This is a vessel of contact that bears what is pure.' [The man] said, 'Does the Venerable One know me?' The Patriarch said, 'I do not know, and knowing is not I.' The Patriarch further said to him, 'You may state your own clan and name.' The man then recited a verse, saying: / 'I was born now in this kingdom, / And also recall times of old: / My original clan was Bhāradvāja, / And my name is Vasumitra.' / The Patriarch received him and shaved his head to fulfill his precepts and virtue. Shortly thereafter, he instructed him, saying, 'I am now old and about to enter parinirvāṇa. The Tathāgata's treasury of the true Dharma eye is now entrusted to you; you must transmit it without letting it be severed. Listen to my verse: / Having no mind, there is nothing to be obtained; / If one speaks of obtaining, it is not called Dharma. / If one understands that mind is not mind, / Only then does one grasp the Dharma of mind after mind.' / After the verse, the Venerable One entered the lion's sprint samādhi (siṃhavikrīḍita-samādhi), vaulted into the great void to the height of seven tāla trees, returned to his seat, and self-immolated through the fire-light samādhi. Vasumitra collected his sacred relics and bones, stored them in a seven-jeweled casket, built a stupa, and placed them on its upper level for veneration. This was during the era of King Xiang of Zhou (Zhengzong ji).
