Che. Son of Emperor Jing. He reigned for fifty-four years and died at the age of seventy-one. He dismissed the Hundred Schools and promoted the Six Classics; he founded the Imperial Academy, reformed the suburban sacrifices, fixed the musical pitch pipes, composed poetry and music, established the Feng and Shan sacrifices, paid homage to the hundred gods, and succeeded the former Zhou. His ordinances, decrees, and literary culture were brilliant. The Emperor had an enduring fondness for Confucian arts. Chancellor Dou Ying, Grand Commander Tian Fen, and Censor-in-Chief Zhao Wan requested the establishment of the Bright Hall (Mingtang) to receive the feudal lords in audience. They recommended their teacher, Master Shen, who was then over eighty years old, making him a Grand Palace Grandee; he lodged at the Lu residence and discussed the Bright Hall, imperial tours of inspection, and changes to the calendar and court dress. The Emperor summoned men of worthy talent from the four quarters, Zhuang Zhu being the foremost (written as Yan Zhu in the Book of Han to avoid the taboo of Emperor Ming). Later he obtained Zhu Maichen from Wu, Wuqiu Shouwang from Zhao, Sima Xiangru from Shu, Dongfang Shuo from Pingyuan, Mu Gao from Wu, and Zhong Jun from Jinan, all of whom served at his side. On the first day of the eleventh month, jiazi, the winter solstice of the first year of Taichu, he ordered Sima Qian to create the Han Taichu Calendar, taking the yin month as the first month of the year, esteeming the colour yellow, and using five as the base number. However, he mobilised troops and waged war, expanding outwards into the four barbarian regions, and went so far as to monopolise alcohol, supervise salt and iron, cast white metal, and create hide currency. Under this Emperor, reign eras were first established, something no ruler had done since antiquity. At the beginning of his reign, it was called the first year of Jianyuan: Jianyuan (six [years]), Yuanguang (six), Yuanshuo (six), Yuanshou (six), Yuanding (six), Yuanfeng (six), Taichu (four), Tianhan (four), Taishi (four), Zhenghe (four), Houyuan (two).
