The Twentieth Patriarch, the Great Being Jayata: A native of Central India. Having received the Dharma, he traveled converting beings and reached the city of Rājagṛha. There was a master of debate named Vasubandhu, who always ate only one meal a day and never lay down, worshipping the Buddha during the six intervals of the day, pure and free of desire. The Patriarch wished to liberate him and used words to provoke him. Vasubandhu gave rise to uncontaminated wisdom and recalled that seven kalpas earlier he had been born in the Land of Utmost Bliss; when he was near old age and was on the verge of realizing the fruit, he saw the Bodhisattva of Great Radiance. Leaning his walking stick against the wall, he bowed to the bodhisattva, unaware that the stick rested across the painted face of the Buddha on the wall. Having produced great arrogance, he thereby lost the second fruit. Now that he had met the master, he wished him to bestow compassionate instruction. The Patriarch then told him: "You have accumulated roots of virtue for a long time; you shall succeed to my lineage. Listen to my verse: / When words correspond to the unborn, / It is identical with the nature of the Dharmadhātu. / If one can understand in this way, / One completely penetrates both phenomena and principle." After transmitting the Dharma, the Patriarch stood on his head and peacefully passed away. His relics were collected after cremation and a stupa was built. This corresponded to the era of Emperor Ming of the Later Han (Zhengzong ji).
