The Zhengyi Daoist Teaching. In the sixth year of Yonghe, on Mount Heming in Chongqing Prefecture, Chengdu Circuit, of Sichuan West Circuit, there was a scholar named Zhang Daoling, who styled himself the Celestial Master. He fashioned methods of talismans, water, sacrificial offerings, and registers, and composed Daoist writings in twenty-four fascicles. The common people sought his Dao and all took refuge with him. When Daoling died, he transmitted it to his son Heng; when Heng died, he transmitted it to his son Lu, and it spread widely in the world. Daoist sacrificial prayers took this as their ancestor, and its transmission has continued down to the present day, revered by the whole realm. This is called the Zhengyi Teaching.
