The Twenty-Third Patriarch, Mahāsattva Haklenayaśas. He was a man from the kingdom of the Yuezhi, of the brāhmaṇa caste. His father was Qian Sheng, and his mother was Jinguang. At the age of twenty-two he went forth, and at thirty he met Manorhita and received the Dharma. Traveling and converting people, he reached Central India and preached the Dharma for the king, who joyfully took refuge and paid reverence. Initially, the mahāsattva's senior disciple was named Longzi, who passed away early. Longzi’s elder brother, named Siṃha, was ordained relying upon the mahāsattva. One day, [the mahāsattva] pointed to the northeast and asked the assembly: “What kind of omen is that?” The assembly did not understand. Siṃha said: “I see a vapor like a white rainbow, with five bands of black vapor crossing through it.” The mahāsattva said: “Fifty years after my extinction, a calamity will arise in North India and fall upon your person. I am about to pass into extinction. I now entrust the Dharma eye to you; protect and uphold it well. When you go to other lands, calamity will burden your person; be careful to transmit it early so as not to let it be severed.” Listen to my verse:

“When the mind-ground is recognized,
Do not speak of the inconceivable.
Clearly there is nothing to be attained;
When attained, do not speak of knowing.”

Having transmitted the Dharma, the mahāsattva immediately leapt into the void and displayed the eighteen transformations, returned to his seat, and quietly passed away. The fourfold assembly cremated him and were about to divide his relics, each wishing to enshrine them in a pagoda. The mahāsattva manifested his spiritual power, descending with his traces, and spoke a verse:

“One phenomenon is all phenomena;
One phenomenon subsumes everything.
My body is neither existent nor non-existent;
Why divide it into all these pagodas?”

The assembly then united them into a single stūpa to make offerings to it. This was during the era of Emperor Xian of the Later Han (Zhengzong ji).
