Surname Cao. Ruled by virtue of Earth. Capital at Ye, ancient Xiangzhou (now Zhangde Route in Hedong Shanxi Circuit; within the territory of Jizhou in the Tribute of Yu), later moved to Luoyang. Originally, King Wu, [Cao] Cao, courtesy name Mengde, was a man of Qiao in the Pei kingdom of Shandong. His father Song attained the official rank of Grand Defender. His grandfather Teng was a Palace Regular Attendant under Emperor Ling of the Han; Song was Teng’s adopted son. Cao Cao served as Grand Administrator of Dongjun at the end of the Han. When Dong Zhuo threw the Guanzhong region into disorder, Cao Cao welcomed the Han emperor to establish the capital at Xuzhou (now subordinate to Bianliang Route). Later, Cao Cao's title was advanced to King of Wei, and his son Pi was made Crown Prince. In the twenty-fourth year of the Jian'an reign era of the Han Emperor, a yihai year, the following year being gengzi, in the first month, King Wu Cao Cao died after traveling from Ye to Luoyang. At that time, Crown Prince Pi was at Ye and ascended the throne as King of Wei, changing the reign era to Yankang. In the eleventh month, he received the abdication of the Han and ascended the throne as Emperor, changing the reign era to Huangchu. A general amnesty was declared, and the state was named Wei. He posthumously honored his father, King Cao, as Martial Emperor, with the temple name Taizu. He changed the Counselor-in-chief to Minister over the Masses, and the Imperial Censor-in-chief to Minister of Works. The five rulers of Wei reigned for a total of forty-five years.
