He was the son of Qiaoji and great-grandson of the Yellow Emperor. He ruled by the virtue of Wood and established his capital at West Bo (present-day Yanshi County, Henanfu Route, in the ancient territory of Luozhou). The Emperor was divine and sagacious from birth and spoke his own name. He complied with the righteousness of Heaven and understood the urgent needs of the people. He was benevolent yet awe-inspiring, gracious yet trustworthy. He harvested the wealth of Heaven and Earth and spent it with moderation; he comforted and educated the myriad folk and instructed them with benefit. He tracked the sun and moon, welcoming and seeing them off; he clearly recognized ghosts and spirits and served them with reverent care. Wherever the sun and moon shone and wherever the wind and rain reached, none failed to submit to him. He had eight talented sons, known as the 'Eight Primal Ones' (Ba Yuan). He was on the throne for seventy years and died at the age of one hundred and five. He passed away and was buried at Mount Qiu in present-day Kaizhou, Daming Route (in the territory of Yan and Ji provinces). His son Zhi ascended the throne and reigned for nine years, but was not virtuous; he abdicated in favor of the Marquis of Tang (Yao).
