十一月西魏兵逼江陵。帝與太子王褒謝答仁朱買臣退保金城。帝入東閤竹庭。命舍人高善寶。焚古今圖書十四萬卷。又以寶劍斫柱令折。嘆曰。文武之道今夜盡矣。去羽儀文物。白馬素車出降。十二月帝為魏人殺之。立梁王詧為梁主。資詧荊州之地。是曰後梁（梁紀）。

In the eleventh month, the Western Wei army closed in on Jiangling. The Emperor, together with Crown Prince Wang Bao, Xie Daren, and Zhu Maichen, retreated to defend the inner city. The Emperor entered the bamboo courtyard of the Eastern Gate and ordered Gentleman-in-Waiting Gao Shanbao to burn one hundred and forty thousand fascicles of ancient and modern maps and writings. He also hacked a pillar with a precious sword until it broke, sighing, "The way of the civilian and martial virtues is brought to an end tonight!" Stripping off his feathered insignia and regalia, he rode out on a plain carriage drawn by white horses to surrender. In the twelfth month, the Emperor was killed by the people of Wei. They enthroned Xiao Cha, King of Liang, as the ruler of Liang, endowing Cha with the territory of Jingzhou. This was known as the Later Liang. (Liang Chronicles)
