Medicine King. Surnamed Wei, named Gu, with the courtesy name Laoshi, he was a native of the kingdom of Kashgar (Shule). In the twenty-fifth year of Kaiyuan he arrived at the capital. Wearing a gauze headcloth and a felt robe, walking with a goosefoot staff, he had hundreds of gourds suspended from his waist and dispensed medicine to all. A single black dog followed him. Whenever there was a sick person, as soon as Gu looked at them they were healed. The Emperor venerated him as the Medicine King Bodhisattva, and the Empress had his portrait painted to make offerings to it (from the Preface to the Bencao and the Shenxian zhuan).
