In the eleventh year of the Yuanhe era, a bingshen year, Chan Master Zhichang of Guizong Monastery in Jiangzhou had double pupils in his eyes. He rubbed them with medicine on his hands; over a long time both corners of his eyes turned red, and for this reason he was called Red-Eyed Guizong. Li Bo, the Prefect of Jiangzhou, asked, "Can a mustard seed contain Mount Sumeru, or is that not empty talk?" The master said, "People say that your Excellency has read ten thousand scrolls of books—is this so?" Li said, "It is." The master said, "From head to heel your Excellency is the size of a coconut; where do the ten thousand scrolls fit?" Bo bowed his head and had an awakening. After the master died, his Dharma heirs were very numerous. The master was a Dharma heir of Mazu.
