Chan Master Yunju was named Daoying. He was a native of Yutian in Youzhou, of the Wang family. He left home in his youth at Yanshou Monastery in Zhuozhou. At the age of twenty-five he became a fully ordained monk. His master had him study the sections and categories of the Śrāvaka Vinaya; as this was not to his liking, he abandoned it. Traveling to various regions, he reached Cuiwei; hearing of the Dharma assembly of Dongshan, he went to visit him, and was in accord with and awakened to the cardinal tenet. He built a hermitage on Sanfeng, and for ten days did not go to the dining hall. Chan Master Jie observed him; every day heavenly beings came to offer him food. Dongshan said to him, "I thought you were quite a fellow, but you still harbor such views!" Calling out in a loud voice, he said, "Hermitage Master Ying!" The master answered, "Yes?" Shan said, "Not thinking of good, not thinking of evil, what is it?" The master had an awakening, returned to his hermitage, and sat in quiet meditation. When the heavenly spirits searched for him, they could not see him; after three days they ceased. Shan encouraged the master to receive people wherever he went. He thereupon burned his hermitage, went to Haihun, and ascended Mount Oufu, the northwestern peak of Mount Lu, which is a peerless scenic spot of the world. He built a dwelling leaning against a tree and lived there, calling it Yunju (Cloud Abode). Patch-robed monks also sought him out and gathered, living scattered among the mountains and under trees, which over time grew into thatched huts. Reaching this point, in the thirteenth year of Xiantong, it finally became a Dharma assembly, with students numbering up to one thousand five hundred. Proclaiming the Way of Dongshan, he resided there for thirty years, and his teaching spread throughout the realm. Zhong Chuan, Prince of Nanchang, honored him as his teacher. On the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth month in the first year of Tianfu of Zhaozong, the master opened his final skillful means for the assembly, recounting the beginning and end of his monastic career. On the third day of the first month of the following year, he passed away sitting upright. By imperial decree he was posthumously titled Chan Master Hongjue, and his stupa was named Yuanji (Records of the Transmission of the Lamp).
