Yantou. Chan Master Yantou of E Prefecture was named Quanhuo. He was a son of the Ke family of Quanzhou. In his youth, he paid homage to Master Yi of Qingyuan to shave his head. He received the precepts at Baoshou Monastery in Chang'an, studied various divisions of sutras and treatises, and wandered freely through the Chan groves. Later he studied under Deshan, chimed with the purport, and resided at Yantou. Encountering Emperor Wuzong's suppression of the teaching, he went into hiding beside a lake and worked as a ferryman. Later he built a hut on Mount Wolong by Lake Dongting, where disciples gathered like spokes of a wheel. Arriving at the third year of Guangqi, on the eighth day of the fourth month, he passed into quiescence. His disciples cremated him and obtained forty-nine relics, erecting a pagoda for offerings. By imperial order, he was posthumously granted the title 'Chan Master Qingyan.' He was the dharma heir of Deshan Jian; Jian was the dharma heir of Longtan Xin (Record of the Transmission of the Lamp).
