Chan Master Wuzhuo of Hangzhou was named Wenxi, of the Zhu family in Jiaxing. At the age of seven, he renounced household life and took the tonsure under Guoqing at Changle Temple in his native district. He studied the vinaya and listened to doctrinal teachings. When Emperor Wuzong suppressed the Dharma, he returned to lay dress and concealed his brilliance. Early in the reign of Emperor Xuanzong, he was ordinated a second time at Qifeng Temple in Yanguan. He went to Mount Wutai to pay homage to Mañjuśrī. He met an old man leading an ox, who invited the master to enter a monastery. Letting the ox loose, the old man guided the master up to the hall. The old man sat on a couch, pointed to an embroidered stool, and bade him sit. The old man asked: "Where have you come from recently?" The master replied: "The south." The old man asked: "How is the Buddhadharma maintained in the south?" The master replied: "In the Dharma-Ending Age, monks rarely observe the vinaya and precepts." The old man asked: "How large are the assemblies?" The master said: "Sometimes three hundred, sometimes five hundred." The master then asked: "How is the Buddhadharma maintained here?" The old man said: "Dragons and snakes are mixed together; ordinary people and sages dwell together." The master asked: "How large is the assembly?" The old man said: "The front three-three and the rear three-three." The old man called a novice boy, Junti, to bring tea, and further served butter and curd. The old man picked up a crystal cup and asked: "Does the south still have this?" The master said: "No." The old man said: "With what do you usually drink tea?" The master had no response and took his leave. The old man ordered the novice boy to see him off. The master asked the novice boy: "What does 'the front three-three and the rear three-three' mean?" The boy called: "Bhadanta!" The master responded. The boy said: "How much is it?" The master asked: "What place is this?" The boy said: "This is the Prajñā Monastery of the Diamond Cave." The master was filled with sorrow and realized that the old man was Mañjuśrī. He immediately bowed his head to the boy and wished to beg for a parting word. The boy spoke a verse, saying: / "When there is no anger upon the face, it is an offering utensil; / When there is no anger in the mouth, it emits marvelous fragrance. / When there is no anger in the mind, it is a precious jewel; / That which is unstained and undefiled is the true eternal." / When he finished speaking, Junti and the monastery both vanished. In the third year of the Xiantong era of Yizong (862), the master arrived at the Guanyin Cloister (Longxing) in Hongzhou to visit Chan Master Yangshan Ji, suddenly awakening to the mind-dharma. Later he returned to Western Zhe and resided at Longquan Temple (in Hangzhou). King Qian respectfully offered him a purple robe and bestowed the title Chan Master Wuzhuo. When the third year of Guanghua arrived, on the third day of the tenth month, he addressed the assembly, saying: "When the mind of the three realms is exhausted, that is nirvāṇa." Having spoken, he sat cross-legged and passed away at the age of eighty. His stupa was on the western embankment of Lingyin at Vulture Peak. In the second year of the Tianyou era of Emperor Aidi (905), rebel soldiers opened the master's stupa: his fleshly body was undecayed, and his nails and hair were all long. King Qian, mistakenly hearing of this, sent Vice General Shao Zhi to re-inter and entomb him. In the thirteenth year of the Jiading era under Emperor Ningzong of the Song (1220), his remains were moved and buried to the left of the stupa of Chan Master Zhijue Shou on Mount Jingci. The master was a dharma heir of Yangshan Ji, and Ji was a dharma heir of Chan Master Guishan You (Wudeng huiyuan).
