Liu Yin of Nanping was a native of Shangcai (the present-day Runing, ancient Caizhou). His ancestor Anren moved to Minzhong, engaged in commerce in the Southern Sea, and consequently settled there. His father Qian served as a command officer in Guangzhou and had merit in defeating Huang Chao; he was promoted to Prefect of Fengzhou and died. The people of the prefecture petitioned for Yin to replace him, and he repeatedly achieved distinguished merit. Emperor Zhaozong of Tang enfeoffed Yin as Prince of Nanhai. In the second year of Tianyou under Emperor Ai, he was promoted to Protector-General of Annam and Military Commissioner of Qinghai. The following year, he was enfeoffed as Prince of Nanping. Now Liang added to Yin's titles that of Palace Attendant, with his civil enfeoffment as Prince of Nanhai, and then made Yin King of Dapeng. In the first year of Qianhua he died at the age of thirty-eight. His younger brother Yan inherited the position, possessing all the lands south of the mountains. Yan changed his name to Yan. In the third year of Zhenming under the Last Emperor of Liang, he ascended the imperial throne, adopting the dynastic title Han and the reign title Qianheng; he reigned for twenty-five years and lived to fifty-four.
