In the yisi year, the third year of Kaiping, in the tenth month, Wang Zongbian, Prefect of Shuzhou, claimed illness and shut his doors. The ruler of Shu suspected that he was boasting of his merit and harboring resentment, so he conferred on him the title of Acting Grand Protector, which Wang did not accept. He said to others, "The incorruptible are content and have no worries; the greedy worry and are never content. For a petty person like me to attain this rank is already sufficient; how could I endlessly seek advancement?" The ruler of Shu praised his resolve.
