Wei Prefecture is now Daming Circuit. Chan Master Xinghua, named Cunjiang, was a native of this prefecture. The Emperor summoned him into the palace and served him with the etiquette of a disciple. One day the Emperor asked, saying, "I have recovered the Central Plains and obtained a bright pearl, yet no one has priced it." The Master said, "May Your Majesty show me the pearl." The Emperor stretched out the foot of his headcloth with his hands. The Master said, "Who would dare to set a price on the lord's treasure?" The Emperor was delighted and bestowed upon him a purple robe and a master's title. The Master did not accept either. Thereupon [the Emperor] bestowed a horse for him to ride. Falling to the ground, he injured one foot. The Emperor again provided a physician. The Master called the director of the cloister: "Make me a wooden crutch." Receiving it, the Master walked around the cloister and asked the monks, saying, "Do you still know this old monk?" The assembly said, "How could we not recognize the master?" The Master said, "A lame-footed Dharma master can speak of it, but cannot walk it." When he reached the Dharma hall, he ordered the karmadāna to strike the bell to assemble the community. The Master said, "Do you still know this old monk?" The assembly made no reply. The Master threw down his crutch, sat upright, and passed away. By imperial order, he was posthumously titled Chan Master Guangji. The Master was the dharma heir of Chan Master Linji Xuan (*Transmission of the Lamp*).
