In the ninth month, the Emperor dispatched his son Prince Jiji of Wei and Commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs Guo Chongtao to subjugate Shu. Wang Yan, the ruler of Shu, carrying his coffin and holding a jade disc in his mouth, emerged to surrender. Meng Zhixiang, courtesy name Baosheng, was a native of Longgang in Xingzhou. Commissioner of Military Affairs Guo Chongtao had the old merit of having recommended Zhixiang. When he was about to set out, he said to the Emperor, "Meng Zhixiang is trustworthy, sincere, and strategic. If we gain Sichuan on this campaign and seek a commander, no one surpasses this man." The Emperor approved. The grand army then marched west, entered Sanguan, advanced by forced marches, attacked Shu, and received its surrender. Chongtao thereupon appointed Zhixiang as Military Commissioner of Xichuan to garrison Chengdu. In the fourth year of Mingzong's Changxing era, he was enfeoffed as Prince of Shu. In the first year of the Prince of Lu's Qingtai era, he ascended the imperial throne and died. His son Chang succeeded to the throne, established the reign era Mingde, and named the state Shu. In the third year of Song Taizu's Qiande era, he surrendered to Song, terminating the state after a total of forty-one years.
