The Yunmen lineage: Chan Master Wenyan of Guangfeng Monastery on Mount Yunmen in Shaozhou in Guangdong circuit. He was born in Xiushui in Zhexi, the present-day Jiaxing Route. His secular surname was Zhang. When young, he went forth from the household under the Vinaya master Zhicheng of Kongwang Monastery. On reaching adulthood, he shaved his hair and received full ordination at the altar in Piling. He attended Zhicheng for several years, thoroughly exploring the Vinaya section. Because his own matter was not yet clarified, he went to call on the Senior Venerable Chen of Muzhou. Pressing through the door, he entered. Muzhou seized him and said, "Speak! Speak!" The Master hesitated. Muzhou pushed him out, saying, "A drill of the Qin era with three wheels!" He then slammed the door, injuring one of the Master's feet. From this, the Master had an awakening. Muzhou then directed him to see Chan Master Cun of Xuefeng. After having secretly tallied with the mind school, he went out over the mountains and widely called on teachers everywhere. Later, he arrived in the Guangzhou area at the place of Chan Master Min of Lingshu. At first, [Lingshu] did not invite a head monk. When someone urged him to invite a first seat, Lingshu said, "My head monk is born; he has gone forth from the household." After a long time, he said, "My head monk is on pilgrimage; he has awakened to the Way." After another long time, he said, "My head monk has arrived!" One day, he ordered the bell to be struck to welcome the head monk. The Master arrived just at that moment. Min smiled and said, "I have waited for you so long, why have you come so late?" He immediately appointed him. The Master accepted the position without declining; this was in the gengyin year, the first year of Changxing. Soon afterwards, the ruler of Guangzhou, King Liu, was about to raise troops, and went to Lingshu to determine whether it was auspicious or not. Min knew this. Sealing a box with his own hand, he told his attendant, "When the King arrives, bring this out and wait for him." Just then, a monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch coming from the West?" Min then sat upright on his seat and passed away. When the King arrived and heard that Min had already transformed, he was greatly shocked and sighed. The attendant monk presented the box. Opening it, the writing said, "The eye of devas and humans is the senior monk in the hall." The King then invited the Master to succeed as abbot of Lingshu, welcoming him to the administrative capital to open the Dharma hall. After a long time, he moved to reside on Mount Yunmen in Shaoyang. In the wushen year, the ruler of Guangzhou repeatedly invited him to enter the palace to inquire about the Dharma, treating him with the etiquette of a master and bestowing the title Chan Master Kuangzhen. In the seventh month, he was welcomed to the royal residence to receive offerings. In the ninth month, he took leave of the King and returned to the mountain. On the tenth day of the fourth month of the following year, the Master presented a memorial taking leave of the ruler of Guangzhou, handed down admonitions to his students, sat upright, and passed away. His whole body was stupaed behind the abbot's quarters. In the bingyin year, the fourth year of the Qiande reign of Taizu of the Zhao family [of the Song dynasty], which was the ninth year of Tianbao of the ruler of Guangzhou, the Master appeared in a dream to Ruan Shaozhuang, saying, "Deliver a message for me to the Xiuhua official envoy, Specially Advanced Li Tuo." Tuo then submitted a memorial requesting permission to open the stupa. By imperial decree, the sacred remains were received and welcomed to the inner court to receive offerings. It was only after more than a month that they were returned. On this account, the monastery's plaque was changed to Dajue, and the posthumous title was augmented to Great Compassionate Cloud, Kuangzhen Hongming Chan Master. The Master was the dharma heir of Chan Master Cun of Xuefeng; Cun was the heir of [Xuan]jian of Deshan; Jian was the heir of Chan Master Xin of Longtan. The world revered the Master's Dharma path, naming it the Yunmen lineage.
