Senior Monk Jing of Guoqing Monastery on Mount Tiantai had first attained awakening under the words of Chan Master Bei of Xuansha. He lived on Mount Tiantai for over thirty years. Someone asked, "The thoughts in the mind are scattering and flying about, and I have not yet clarified how to gather and subdue them." Jing said, "Turn around and take this scattering and flying mind to investigate the place where they scatter and fly. If, upon investigating it, there is no place, then where do the scattering and flying thoughts abide? When you turn back to investigate the investigating mind, where is the mind that can investigate?" Having contemplated the meaning of illusion in the teachings, Jing composed a verse: / If you say phenomena all exist like an illusion, / Then committing all kinds of misdeeds should be without fault. / Why is the karma created not forgotten, / So that relying on the Buddha's compassion, he arises to receive and guide? / A certain Junior Monk Jing answered him: / An illusory person produces an illusion: the illusory iron-wheel enclosure; / Illusory karma can summon what illusory [laws] punish. / Not understanding illusion produces all illusory suffering; / Awakening to know that it is like an illusion, illusion is unconditioned. / The traces left by the two Senior Monks Jing remain at Guoqing Monastery (inscribed on stele records of the monastery).
