The Tang ruler ingested alchemical medicines from Daoist masters and gradually became irascible; when ministers reported matters, he often flew into violent rages. He asked the Daoist master Wang Qixia, "By what Way can Great Peace be brought about?" He replied, "A ruler governs his mind and governs his body, and only then governs family and state. Now Your Majesty has not yet been able to discard being anxious when hungry and joyful when full; how can you talk of Great Peace?" Empress Song praised and sighed over this, regarding it as supreme words. Whatever was bestowed by the Tang ruler, Qixia accepted none of it. In the second month, an ulcer broke out on the Tang ruler's back. He summoned King Jing of Qi to enter and attend his illness, telling Jing, "I ingested metals and stones wishing to prolong life, but instead have harmed my vitality. You ought to take warning from this." That night he passed away. Emperor Yuanzong, Jing, acceded to the throne.
