諱知遠。改名暠。沙陀部人。世居太原。與晉高祖俱事唐明宗。晉高祖即位。以知遠為保義軍節度使。遷河東節度使。開運二年封北平王。晉帝北遷。帝即位于晉陽。在位二年。壽五十四　稱天福年（二）乾祐（一）。

His taboo name was Zhiyuan; he later changed his name to Gao. He was a man of the Shatuo tribe, whose family had resided in Taiyuan for generations. He and Gaozu of the Jin had both served Emperor Mingzong of the Tang. When Gaozu of the Jin ascended the throne, he appointed Zhiyuan as military commissioner of the Baoyi Army, and later transferred him to be military commissioner of Hedong. In the second year of Kaiyun, he was enfeoffed as King of Beiping. When the Jin emperor was moved north, the Emperor ascended the throne in Jinyang. He reigned for two years and lived to fifty-four, using the reign era of Tianfu (for two [years]) and Qianyou (for one).
