In autumn, the seventh month, Grand Defender Duke Wang Dan (posthumously titled Wen-zheng) passed away. The Duke had been in the administration for eighteen years. In critical illness, he instructed Hanlin Academician Yang Yi, saying: "I deeply detest afflictions; I wish in future lives to be a bhikṣu sitting in tranquil meditation in the forest, taking the contemplation of mind as joy. When my mat is about to be changed, please shave my beard and hair, dress me in the three dyed robes, perform the cremation rites, and erect a bone pagoda beside the ancestral cemetery." Yi said: "You are one of the Three Excellencies; how could the funerary robe of state bestowed upon you be placed upon the body of a monk?" Conferring with his orphaned heirs, they merely placed the three robes inside the coffin, without burying any jewels or jade (Wenying's Xiangshan lu).
