In spring, on the fifth day of the first month, the Venerable Zhili, Fazhi of Mingzhou, sat cross-legged, assembled the congregation, and said: 'I established the Yanqing Bodhimaṇḍa, vowing to disseminate the Lotus Samādhi. You all must not become the last people to sever the lineage of the Buddha. Life must have death, just as morning is followed by evening. Cultivate diligently without interruption, and throughout lifetimes and births there will be places where we meet.' Having finished speaking, he suddenly chanted 'Amitābha Buddha' and fell silent. His shrine was left exposed for two times seven days: his nails and hair had grown, and his features were as if alive. When he was cremated (which means burning by fire), his root of the tongue was indestructible, and the five-colored relics were countless. Zhao Bian, Grand Academician of the Hall of Aiding Governance, concurrently Junior Protector of the Crown Prince, and Duke Qingxian, wrote the stele inscription on the master's deeds and practice (Jiaoxing lu).
