The Śūraṅgama Sūtra Commentary: Dharma Master Changshui, named Zixuan, of Jiaxing (which is Xiuzhou) was a native of Xiuzhou. At first, he relied on Dharma Master Hongmin of his home prefecture to study the Śūraṅgama Sūtra; when he came to the passage 'the two marks of movement and stillness are clearly unborn,' he had an awakening. Hearing of the spiritual reputation of Chan Master Jue of Mount Langya in Chuzhou, he hastened there to pay respects. Reaching the gate, he coincided with the master ascending the hall; he then asked: 'If it is fundamentally pure and so of itself, how do the mountains, rivers, and the great earth suddenly arise?' Jue said with a stern voice: 'If it is fundamentally pure and so of itself, how do the mountains, rivers, and the great earth suddenly arise?' Zixuan had a great awakening right then, and intended to receive transmission from him. Chan Master Jue said to him: 'Your school has not flourished for a long time; you should strengthen your resolve to uphold it in order to repay the Buddha's kindness.' Zixuan followed his instruction. Later, he resided at Changshui, where his followers numbered nearly a thousand. Based on the Xianshou school, he commented on the Śūraṅgama Sūtra in ten fascicles. Censor-in-Chief Wang Sui wrote a preface for it, and it was circulated in the world (Changshui shu ji). Chan Master Guangzhao of Mount Langya, named Huijue, was a Dharma heir of Chan Master Zhao of Fenyang.
