Duke Zheng Fu Bi, governing Bozhou as an envoy-chancellor, invited Chan Master Zhengwu Xiuyong of Huayan Chan Cloister in Yingzhou to consult and resolve matters of the mind-dharma. When he retired from office to reside in Luoyang, he sent a verse to Chan Master Yuanzhao Ben of Suzhou, saying: / 'Once I met Master Yong, whose awakening was deep; / Through causal conditions I obtained the venerable master's mind. / Let them speak in vain of rivers and mountains far to the southeast; / Facing each other, my eyes behold the spiritual radiance and wondrous sound.' / He also wrote a letter saying: 'Bi has paid attention to the patriarchal Way for a long time, often lamenting that I have not encountered a clear-sighted person to dispel my unenlightened shallowness. Though I had long heard of your abundant virtue, I had no occasion to pay my respects. Fortunately, yesterday I went out to govern the Bo agency, which borders Yingzhou. Through the good offices of my fellow-townsman Zhang Jingshan of the Ministry of Justice, I was able to invite Master Yong; he came down to visit and we stayed together for nearly a month. By his power of compassionate skillful means he enabled me to attain an awakening. As the retreat of the rains approached, in early fourth month he abruptly had to return to Yingzhou. Regarding polishing and purging, I have achieved hardly any merit. Declining age and illness succeed one another, and being dull and dim, it is hard to penetrate. What Master Guling of old called "not expecting in old age to hear the ultimate matter" has today been witnessed by Bi. Heaven's blessing, Heaven's blessing! Although Bi attained the Dharma from Master Yong, the fundamental source comes from the Old Venerable. The lineage is extremely exact, and I must also wish for your support. I further hope you will deign to extend compassion and gather me in, granting guidance from afar so that what has not arrived may arrive, thus becoming like Pang Yun under Nanyue and Pei Xiu under Baizhang' (Yunwo jitan).
