Wang Anshi, the Duke of Jing State, was a native of Linchuan. At this time, in the twelfth month, winter, of the third year of Xining, he was appointed Chancellor. In the fourth month, summer, of the seventh year, there was no rain, and Anshi was dismissed from the chancellorship. In the second month of the eighth year, he was again appointed Chancellor (Imperial Annals). In the tenth month of the ninth year, Anshi stepped down from government and returned to Jiankang. In the tenth year, he memorialized requesting that his former residence in Jiankang be donated to become a Chan monastery, and invited Kewen to assume the abbacy. The Emperor bestowed the name plaque reading 'Baoning' and granted [Ke]wen the title 'Chan Master Zhenjing'. [Ke]wen was Chan Master Yun'an of Baofeng in Longxing. His name was Kewen, born to the Zheng clan of Shanfu. He studied under Chan Master Huanglong Nan and profoundly attained the profound mysteries; he became the Dharma heir of Chan Master Nan. Coming to the fifteenth day of the tenth month in the first year of Chongning of Emperor Huizong, he took out his monastic implements and distributed them among his disciples. In the middle of the night, he bathed, changed his robes, sat cross-legged, and passed away. The five-colored flames of the cremation produced relics wherever they reached. His divided relics were buried at Botan and Xinfeng (Stele Inscription and Principal Biography). The Duke of Jing said to Chan Master Fohui Quan of Jiangshan (in Jiankang): 'When the World-Honoured One held up a flower, Kāśyapa smiled. Recently, while in the Hanlin Academy, I happened to see the three-fascicle Scripture on the Great Brahmā King Asking the Buddha to Resolve Doubts, which says: "The Brahmā King, in the assembly on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa, offered a golden flower to the Buddha and requested the Buddha to preach the Dharma. The World-Honoured One ascended the seat, held up a flower, and showed it to the assembly. The millions of humans and devas were all at a loss; only Kāśyapa broke into a smile. The World-Honoured One said: 'I possess the treasury of the true Dharma eye, the wondrous mind of nirvāṇa, and I entrust it to Kāśyapa.'"' (Meixi ji).
