In his final years, Emperor Muzong was cruel, suspicious, and ruthless. Everyone held their breath in fear of calamity. On one occasion, being drunk, he demanded food and did not receive it, and wished to execute the cook. The culinary supervisor, fearing that calamity would reach him, brought in food, concealed a blade, and assassinated the Emperor below Mount Hei. It was the ninth month. He was posthumously titled Emperor Tianshun, with the temple name Muzong. Jingzong ascended the throne; his personal name was Mingji, later changed to Xian. He was the son of Yuji, Emperor Shizong. Earlier, when Shizong was assassinated, the Emperor was nine years old. Imperial cook and Chief of Food Liu Jieli wrapped him in felt and hid him in a pile of firewood, so he escaped unharmed. At this point he took the throne. Suffering from a wind disorder, he often did not attend court. In Renwu, the ninth year of Qianheng, in the twelfth month, he died. He was posthumously titled Emperor Xiaocheng, with the temple name Jingzong.
