In the Song, Chan Master Fori of Jingshan in Hangzhou was named Zonggao. He was born into the Xi family of Ningguo in Xuanzhou, Jiangdong. He was a Dharma heir of Chan Master Foguo Yuanwu Keqin. Earlier, in the seventh year of Shaoxing, he was imperially summoned to reside at Jingshan. In the fifth month of the eleventh year, Xinyou, because he went up to the hall for Zhang Jiucheng and spoke of the divine-arm crossbow, the imperial court destroyed his ordination certificate and robes and banished him to Hengzhou. Down to this twenty-first year, in the eleventh month, he was moved to Meizhou. Before long, an imperial edict restored his robes and status. Receiving imperial grace, he returned north. The four quarters left seats vacant to invite him, but he did not accept. On the twenty-third day of the twelfth month, an imperial edict ordered him to reside at Guangli Chan Monastery on Mount King Aśoka in Mingzhou. In the twenty-eighth year of Shaoxing, an imperial edict commanded him to reside at Jingshan again. On the tenth day of the eighth month in the first year of Longxing under Xiaozong, he manifested entry into silence at the Bright Moon Hall on Jingshan. His worldly age was seventy-five; his monastic seniority was fifty-eight summers. His whole body was buried in the monastery mountain. He was bestowed the posthumous title Pujue, and his stupa was named Baoguang. When Xiaozong was the Prince of Pu'an Commandery, he once dispatched an inner palace superintendent to Jingshan to inquire about the Way. Fori presented a verse, which said: / "Great roots, great vessel, and great power; / Bearing the great matter is extraordinary. / At the tip of a single hair, the message is conveyed; / Throughout the entire world, bright and clear, it is not concealed." / The prince praised it. When he was enfeoffed as King of Jian, he again dispatched an inner palace guest-prefect to Jingshan to make offerings to the five hundred arhats, personally wrote the three large characters "Miaoxi An" (Hermitage of Wondrous Joy), and composed an encomium on his portrait to send to the master, saying: / "Production and cessation are unceasing; / The ever-abiding does not abide. / Perfect enlightenment, empty and bright, / Manifests in accordance with things." / When Xiaozong ascended the imperial throne, he bestowed upon the master the title "Chan Master Dahui." He collected all the imperial writings he had previously bestowed and had them inscribed with the imperial seal; the imperial grace was deep and abundant. The master had very many Dharma-inheriting disciples who divided the lamp. The Grand Councillor of the Right Tang Situi, the Participant in Determining Governmental Affairs Li Bing, the Hanlin Academician Wang Zao, the Vice Minister of Rites Zhang Jiucheng, and the Supervising Secretary Feng Ji—the scholar-officials who attained his Way and awakened thoroughly are fully recorded in works such as his long letters and general sermons. Zhang Jun, Junior Protector, Military Commissioner of the Baoxin Army, and Duke of the State of Wei, composed the inscription for his stupa. An imperial edict granted that his recorded sayings be entered into the Canon and circulated (Pudeng lu).
