宋四月庚戌。帝聽朝謂左右曰。太祖皇帝問趙普曰。天下何者最大。普曰道理最大。朕常三復斯言。祖宗每事必問道理。焉得不治（中興事鑑）。

In the Song dynasty, in the fourth month, on the gengxu day, the Emperor held court and said to his attendants, "Emperor Taizu asked Zhao Pu, 'What under heaven is the greatest?' Pu said, 'Principle (daoli) is the greatest.' I often recite and reflect upon these words thrice. The ancestors always inquired into principle in every matter; how could good governance not be achieved?" (Zhongxing shijian).
