Chan Master Kengtang of Jingci in Lin'an Prefecture was named Yanchong, born into the Sheng family of Yuqian in Hangzhou. In his youth, he took Yikan of Mingkong Cloister as his master and was ordained. While on his study travels, he grasped the essentials under Chan Master Wan'an Yan of Donglin. Chong received an imperial decree to reside at Jingci. When he demonstrated quiescence, he was enshrined in a stūpa at the monastery's southern cloister. He was the dharma heir of Wan'an Yan. Wan'an resided at Donglin in Jiangzhou and was named Daoyan, a native of Tongchuan in Shu commandery, from a clan second to none. He had long trained under Yuanwu; when Yuanwu returned to Shu, he instructed him to rely on Miaoxi, and sent a letter to Miaoxi saying, 'The painting of Yan of Chuan is complete; it only lacks the dotting of the eyes.' When Miaoxi lived at Yunmen and Yangyu, Yan attended upon him in both places. Inquiring day and night, he finally attained great enlightenment, and subsequently became the dharma heir of Chan Master Dahui Gao (from the Wudeng Huiyuan).
