In the Song dynasty, in the third month of spring in the fifth year of the Shaoxi era, Emperor Shouhuang fell ill. On the night of the dingyou day of the sixth month, Emperor Shouhuang passed away. The emperor was bedridden with illness. On that day, the Grand Empress Dowager issued an edict allowing mourning dress to be assumed within the inner palace. In the autumn, on the jiazi day of the seventh month, the Grand Empress Dowager issued an edict stating: 'Due to illness, the emperor has up to now been unable to perform the mourning rites. He previously wrote by his own hand that he wished to retire into leisure. His imperial son, the Prince of Jia, may ascend the imperial throne. Honor the emperor as the Retired Emperor and the empress as the Retired Empress.' The Prince of Jia resolutely declined, and looking at Bureau of Military Affairs Official Zhao Ruyu, he said, 'I am without guilt, yet I fear bearing the reputation of filial impiety.' The Palace Gate Proclamation Attendant, Palace Attendant Guan Li, and others hastily draped a yellow robe over the Prince of Jia. The prince resisted and would not accept it. Ruyu pleaded persistently, and so he ascended the imperial throne at the plain tent of the eastern balustrade (from the Songjian).
