Yan Han, Minister of the Household of the Jin, resigned his office on account of old age and lived in retirement for over twenty years. In the tenth month of this year, he died at the age of ninety-three. Guo Pu once visited Han and wished to perform a divination for him. Han said: "Years are with Heaven, while position rests with men. To cultivate oneself while Heaven does not grant [success] is destiny; to hold fast to the Way while men do not recognize it is human nature. Since I possess my own nature and destiny, there is no need to trouble the venerable tortoise shell."
