The śramaṇa Zhu Daoyou, that is, Bo Daoyou. Originally he stayed at Mount Shicheng in Shan; in this year he moved to Mount Chicheng in Shifeng of Tai Prefecture (now Mount Tiantai in Tai Prefecture), where he sat in meditation in a stone chamber. A pack of tigers squatted before him; while You chanted scriptures, one tiger alone fell asleep. You tapped its head with a ruyi scepter, saying, 'Why do you not listen to the sūtra?' When the chanting ended, the tigers all departed. Shortly thereafter, a great serpent of ten arm-spans came, coiled around, and held its head high toward You; after half a day, it departed. One day, a man came before him and said: 'Your disciple is a son of an emperor of the Xia; I have dwelt here for more than two thousand years. Now I am going to Mount Hanshi, and I readily yield this chamber to offer it to you.' Thereupon, sounding drums and bugles, he soared into the clouds and departed. You entered quiescence in the eighth year of the Taiyuan era under Emperor Wu of Eastern Jin (His Biography).
