The Mountain Deity Requests the Precepts. Shi Tanyong initially served Fu's Qin as General of the Palace Guard. After [Fu] Jian was defeated in the south, he subsequently followed Dharma Master Dao'an and went forth from home. Next, he served the venerable Yuan of Mount Lu. Later, he built a thatched hut west of Mount Lu, where, together with his disciple Tanguo, he meditated deeply on the gate of Chan. Suddenly, there was a man of refined and elegant appearance with twenty attendants who came to request the five precepts. Yong knew he was a mountain deity, so holding the censer, he conferred the three refuges and the five precepts upon him and preached the essentials of the Dharma for him. The deity made an offering of seven foreign chopsticks to Yong, bowed, and took his leave, disappearing in an instant. The three refuges are taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma, and taking refuge in the Saṅgha. The five precepts are not killing, not stealing, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not drinking wine, and not speaking falsely (Biographies of Eminent Monks).
