Śramaṇa Zhiyan was the son of the King of Khotan. He came to the Tang at a young age, early on enjoying honor and emoluments, and was appointed general-in-chief and enfeoffed as a commandery duke. In the fifth month of this year, he requested to donate his residence as a monastery, and an imperial edict granted his request. He also firmly requested to renounce the household. On the twenty-fourth day of the twelfth month, an imperial ink decree stated: 'It is human nature that none are not covetous of emoluments and begrudging of position; your desire is to abandon worldly life and renounce the household. Suddenly examining your memorial, We are both struck with praise and touched with emotion. We specially grant what you have requested, in order to fulfill your lofty aspiration.' He was further invited to reside at Zhixiang Monastery on Mount Zhongnan, where he took part in many translations (from the Buddhist Catalogue).
