Chan Master of Mount Touzi in Shuzhou was named Datong, a son of the Liu family of Huaining in this prefecture. In his youth, he went to Chan Master Man of Baotang Monastery in Luoyang to leave the household life. At first, he practiced the contemplation of counting the breath (ānāpāna). Next, he read the Avataṃsaka [Sūtra] and illuminated the ocean of his nature. He visited Chan Master Cuiwei Xue and suddenly awakened to the essential principle. Thereupon, he wandered extensively as he pleased. Later, from his native village he retreated into Mount Touzi, built a thatched hut, and dwelled there. Reaching this point, on the sixth day of the fourth month of the fourth year of Qianhua, he entered quiescence. He was imperially bestowed the posthumous title Great Master Ciji. The Master was the dharma heir of Chan Master Cuiwei Xue.
