In the ren-yin year, the sixteenth year of the Zhenguan era, in the fifth month, the Emperor pursued posthumous merit for Empress Taimu at Hongfu Monastery. He personally wrote the text of his vow, stating: "What the sages and wise esteem is filial piety; what the benevolent cherish is their parents. From my youth I was favored with the kindness of nurturing care; grown, I received teachings and instruction. How could I ever forget the reflections of the 'Liao'e' ode? The boundless feeling [toward my parents] cannot be repaid, even as vast heaven. Voicing my perpetual longing, I only feel deep grief. Desiring to repay them yet lacking a way, I rely solely upon unseen assistance. Reverently, with two hundred bolts of silk, I make an offering to the great compassionate teaching. If utmost sincerity may find resonance, I hope it will eliminate past faults so that making good may bear its cause, and in the hope of attaining the bliss of future conditions" (Hongming ji). An imperial decree was also issued to copy the Great Buddhist Canon for Empress Mu, and ten Dharma masters were chosen by imperial order to collate it.
