The Cien Teaching: In the beginning, the Great Being Asaṅga of India frequently ascended to the Tuṣita Heaven palace to inquire about and receive the essential tenets of Maitreya's Vijñaptimātra. When his younger brother, Bodhisattva Vasubandhu, was born in the western regions at Rājagṛha, he elucidated the Mahāyāna, and they subsequently composed treatises together. In India, sages and worthies appeared across generations to propagate this teaching. It came down to the Treatise Master Śīlabhadra, the Treasury of the True Dharma, who was a native of Central India in the Western Heavens. At the age of one hundred and three, he resided at Nālandā Monastery in the kingdom of Rājagṛha. Just then, Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang arrived, and Śīlabhadra bestowed upon him the tenets of the Yogācārabhūmi and Vijñaptimātra. Xuanzang returned to the east and transmitted them to Kuiji. Ji then gathered the old explanations and broadly composed commentaries and treatises. Scholars took him as their authority, calling it the Three-Cart Dharma-Character school that reveals the principle, the Cien Teaching.
