The Nanshan teaching began with the Venerable Upāli. After the World-Honoured One passed into extinction, he assembled the fourfold assembly and compiled the Vinaya Piṭaka. Upāli recited the holy words ten times from memory, and the assembly confirmed there were no errors; only then was it proclaimed. In the second year of Jiaping of Prince Li of Shaoling of the Wei of the Three Kingdoms, the Western Indian śramaṇa Dharmakāla arrived in Luoyang and first produced the *Mahāsāṃghika Prātimokṣa*. In the third year of Yixi of Emperor An of the Eastern Jin, the Venerable Indian śramaṇa Buddhayaśas came with the *Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya*. From this point on, the vinaya observances of China were first complete. Vinaya Master Cong of the Tuoba Wei and others transmitted it generation after generation. When it came to Vinaya Master Xuan, he maintained and upheld it with meticulous care; the devas sent him food and guarded him. He propagated its ceremonial models and the Vinaya Piṭaka, so that it shone brightly throughout the empire; it was called the school of implementing actions to prevent wrongs and halt evil.
