*Uṣṇīṣa-vijayā-dhāraṇī*: The Venerable Buddhapālita, a śramaṇa from the country of Jibin in Northern India of the Western Regions—translated here as Juehu [Awakening-Protected]. Earlier, in the first year of the Yifeng era, he came to Mount Qingliang of Wutai, where he met an old man who asked him, 'Why have you come?' He answered, 'I wish to pay homage to Mañjuśrī.' The old man said, 'Did you bring the *Uṣṇīṣa-vijayā-mantra* with you?' He replied, 'Not yet.' The old man said, 'The sentient beings of this land commit much of the four karmas of killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, and false speech. If you can turn back and fetch this mantra to circulate it in this land for great benefit, this disciple will show the Master where Mañjuśrī is.' Having spoken, he suddenly vanished. Buddhapālita then returned to his native country to fetch the mantra. At this time, in the first year of the Hongdao era, he arrived in Chang'an. An imperial decree ordered Du Xingyi and the Tripiṭaka Master Divākara to translate it. Buddhapālita then took the Sanskrit text to visit the monk Shunzhen at Ximing Monastery; Zhen petitioned the throne and together they translated it under the title *Zunsheng tuoluoni* (*Uṣṇīṣa-vijayā-dhāraṇī*). This was the third translation. It is largely the same as the translation made by Director Du, with minor differences. Compared to the other translations, this one is the most widely circulated. Buddhapālita subsequently entered Mount Wutai, and where he ended his life is unknown (*Gaoseng zhuan*).
