Chan Master Tianyi of Yuezhou was named Yihuai. He was a son of the Chen family of Yueqing in Wenzhou. Grown up, he traveled to the capital, relying on Jingde Temple as a novice postulant. During the Tiansheng reign era, he took the examinations on the scriptures and was ordained. The Master sat in seven bodhimaṇḍas. In his later years, due to illness, he resided at Shanshan Hermitage in Chiyang. His disciple, Chan Master Fori Zhicai of Mount Linping in Hangzhou, welcomed him back to attend upon him. In the fifth year of Jiayou, Cai went to Suzhou, and the Master urged him to return quickly. When Cai arrived, the Master spoke a verse: / 'The red sun illuminates Fusang; / Cold clouds envelop Mount Hua. / At the third watch passing through the Iron Enclosure, / The black dragon's horn is snapped off.' / Cai said: 'Since the egg-shaped stupa is already completed, what is the ultimate matter?' The Master raised his fist to show him. He then went to bed, pushed aside his pillow, and passed away. His whole body was stupaed on the plains east of the monastery. The Master was the dharma heir of Chan Master Xuedou Xian. During the Chongning reign era of Emperor Huizong, he was posthumously titled Chan Master Zhenzong.
