Chan Master Ying'an of Tiantong in Mingzhou was named Tanhua, born into the Jiang family of Qizhou. He was extraordinary from birth. At the age of seventeen, he left home at Dongchan to shave his head, received full ordination, and traveled widely to visit wise teachers. He visited Chan Master Yuanwu at Yunju; Yuanwu was entering Shu and directed him to see Chan Master Zhangjiao Long. Long moved to Huqiu; the master served him for half a year and suddenly awakened to the profound mystery. He was promoted successively to great monasteries. When he resided at Guizong, Dahui was in Meiyang and sent the master a gāthā: / 'Sitting firmly on the foremost peak of the golden wheel, / A thousand demons and a hundred monsters all hide their tracks. / In recent years, true news has arrived again: / Word comes that the orthodox lineage of Yangqi flows through.' / Such was the high regard he enjoyed. On the thirteenth day of the sixth month of the first year of the Longxing era of Emperor Xiaozong, he suddenly passed away. His whole body was enshrined in a stūpa on the monastery mountain. He was the dharma heir of Chan Master Huqiu Long. Long was named Shaolong, dharma heir of Chan Master Yuanwu Qin, of the Linji lineage (from the Wudeng Huiyuan).
