Great Master Fohu: Taboo name Benwu, styled Wo'an, a native of Huangyan in Taizhou. In his youth he was tonsured under Venerable Bao of Fangshan and advanced to receive full ordination. Next, he relied on Jizhao at Central Tianzhu, where he had an awakening. Changing robes, he visited Venerable Cheng of Zhandang and thoroughly investigated the scriptural teachings. Jizhao regretted his departure and sent him a verse saying: / "Entering Chan by relying on teachings has existed from past to present; / Going from Chan into teachings has never been seen from ancient times to now. / Though the gates of the three contemplations in one mind differ, / When the water fills a thousand rivers, the moon remains single and solitary." / The Master later entered the world [as abbot] and burned incense for both Zhandang and Jizhao. At first he was abbot of Yanqing in Siming, and later moved to Upper Tianzhu in Hangzhou, staying the longest. One day, without illness, he sat upright and sloughed off his mortal coil at Baiyun Hall. He was bestowed the posthumous title 'Great Master Fohu Xuanjue Xianci Huidao' (Gaoseng zhuan).
