Chan Master Duan'ya: His monastic name was Congyi; he was a son of the Tang family of Deqing in Huzhou. From childhood, he did not eat meat. His appearance was towering and majestic. Under master Gaofeng, he investigated "Whither does the one return?" and attained awakening. He presented a verse saying: / "Great earth, mountains, and lakes—a single sheet of snow; / Once the sun shines upon it, all traces are gone. / Henceforth, I have no doubt in the Buddhas and Patriarchs; / There is no longer south or north, west or east." / Gaofeng gave him confirmation, saying: "Later, you will occupy the peak of an isolated summit and cry out in a loud voice!" Later, his name was changed to Liaoyi, and he was granted the title Great Master Fohui Yuanming Zhengjue Pudu.
