The Platform-Ascending Bhadanta: His taboo name was Huiwen, and his secular surname was Zhang. He was a native of Guide. Relying on the venerable elder Reverend Gang, he left home, and at twenty he received the full precepts. He received the bodhisattva precepts from the Bhadanta Reverend Wen. He inherited the Dharma from the altar master Reverend En. Thereafter, his conduct and practice became increasingly magnificent, and his renown grew daily. His followers became even more numerous. The Master was strict in his fasting and precepts, and scrupulously guarded his monastic robes; even when traveling on the road or lodging while journeying, his three robes and single bowl were always kept with his person. Vigilant and attentive throughout the entire day, he kept only the Buddha in mind. Clergy and laity following one after another to seek the precepts formed an unbroken line on the roads; receiving a single word of instruction, none failed to be filled with joy and heartfelt gratitude. For over several decades he expounded the Dharma, ascending the platform to confer precepts on more than forty occasions. High officials received him with the etiquette due to a revered master, and those who followed his transformative teaching numbered in the tens of thousands. In this year, on the twenty-second day of the eleventh month, he passed away. His age was seventy-three (Fozu tongzai).
