The Dharma Master of Tianzhu: His taboo name was Zhenjing, his style name was Ru'an, and he was a native of Huating, a son of the Yao family. His mother, Lady Zhu, dreamt of the moon falling into her bosom and became pregnant. At the time of his birth, auspicious light filled the chamber. There was an extraordinary monk who pointed to him and said to his mother: 'This child is the rebirth of Dharma Master Haiyue.' At nine years old, he relied on Reverend Zhi of Mingjing to study the Lotus Sūtra; once it passed through his ears, he could recite it by heart. At sixteen he received tonsure and thoroughly investigated the various vehicles. He called upon Reverend Ze of Yunmeng and Reverend Du of Wuji, fully acquiring their learning. During the Dade era, he resided at Dechuang in Haiyan; during the Zhizhi era, he moved to Chaoguo in Songjiang; during the Taiding era, he dwelt at Lower Tianzhu. He cleared the path before the monastery and enlarged its gate, writing 'Mountain of the Buddha Land' on a board to hang above it. During the Zhishun era, Reverend Cheng of Zhantang at Upper Tianzhu recommended the Master to take his place. He devoted his entire mind to propagating the Dharma, and his assembly numbered over a thousand fingers. The Emperor admired his Way and bestowed upon him the title 'Buddha-Mind of Vast Eloquence' and the robe of gold-patterned purple kaṣāya. The Master recited the Lotus Sūtra without ceasing through winter and summer. In this year he showed illness, wrote a gāthā, and passed away. His age was seventy-two, his monastic age fifty-six. When he was cremated, his tongue-root and parietal bone did not burn, and five-colored relics were found. A stūpa was erected for them on his home mountain (Biographies of Monks).
