An instruction to the Exalter of the World and various practitioners of Tianjie Monastery: "I have heard that the teaching of Śākya makes stillness its primary endeavor, not clamor; constantly washing the mind and cleansing thoughts, dispelling the demons of the five desires, and purifying the root of the six faculties. Even if one does not reach the fruit of the six spiritual penetrations and perfect awakening, the retribution will surely be in the future. Therefore, cultivation is polishing; practice is walking; achievement is accumulated through deeds. Whenever one speaks of cultivating practice, one first puts aside quick proof; will it not then naturally come about unawares? Practitioners of today expect quick proof; after a long while of vagueness, their minds can bear it no longer. Their thoughts are not separated from worldly dust, and regarding things that exist in the world, not a single thought is absent. Consequently, they lose the Way and stray from the tradition, their transgressions piling as high as towering mountains. Can one believe it? Recently, the Left Exalter of the World, the Right Exalter of the World, and the Left Awakener of Righteousness have had unending desires, giving rise to troubles; they have neglected their duties, causing the monastic guardian spirits to look on and leading them to violate the statutes. This was not because others denounced them, nor was it that I refused to investigate; rather, their own actions constitute fixed karma. If they wish to escape difficulty, it is truly hard to untie the knots. What kind of conduct is this? It is all because they did not attend to stillness, but were fond of clamor and creating troubles, bringing it upon themselves. Let practitioners awaken to this."
