Chan Master Huanyin, taboo name Huiming, styled Huanyin, courtesy name Xingyuan; his father was surnamed Xiang, and his mother was of the Chen clan. At age seven, an ulcer erupted on him, and he suddenly went missing. When he was found, he said, 'Four boys carried me here.' Those who understood knew he was protected by heavenly spirits. Later he visited Master Zhuyuan Dao at Mountain Zituo in Xianju. He also visited Master Yuansou Duan at Jingshan. Duan asked, 'Did you come from the Eastern Peak or the Western Peak?' The master pointed to his straw sandals and said, 'These were bought for three copper cash.' Duan said, 'Not yet; speak further!' The master said, 'This one is just like this. How is the Venerable?' Duan said, 'Mindful that you have come from afar, I spare you thirty blows of the staff.' The master thereupon awakened to his meaning. After a long time, he exhausted his inner depths, saying, 'The moment one engages in thought, it is all superfluous dharma.' In this year he showed nirvana at age sixty-nine, with fifty-eight monastic years.
