Chan Master Wanfeng, taboo name Shiwei, styled Wanfeng, was a native of Yongjia, surnamed Jin. His mother dreamed of a white vapor spanning the sky, and when he was born, light filled the room. In swaddling clothes, whenever he saw a monk he would smile and join his palms. At age seven, he left home under Master Sheng of Yanqing Monastery. At sixteen he was tonsured, and at nineteen he received full ordination. He visited Zhiyan at Hupao to seek instruction, and went further to Tiantai to visit Master Wujian Du. Later he returned to Zhiyan's place to resolve his doubts, serving as first seat in the hall. Later Zhiyan transmitted to him his Dharma robe, whisk, portrait, and a verse. Three times he built monasteries, naming them Sheng'en. For thirty years, his way and style spread far and wide. The master showed a verse to those who had attained the Dharma, saying: 'Compassion without conceptual thought: the flowers bloom, the fruit matures; / The causal ground is distinct, and the jewel of wisdom is entrusted. / Clear and penetrating, a spring flowing continuously, / Inherited continuously through thousands and myriads of kalpas.' He also said: 'Now that the Latter Dharma is about to sink, one must go to the water's edge, beneath the trees, and beside the mattock, to guide one or half a person, proclaiming our Way to repay the Buddha's kindness. One must not climb to associate with the noble while despising the lowly, chasing delusions and pursuing fame, confusing the real and confounding the Way. Be thoroughly careful!' Thereupon, he sat cross-legged and uttered a verse: 'For seventy-nine years, / Simply a country bumpkin. / Letting go of the cliff edge, / The bright sun stands in mid-sky.' Having spoken, he expired.
