Chan Master Deyin: Taboo name Puren, courtesy name Deyin, of the Zhao clan of Lanxi. His mother was of the Yang clan. When the master was born, he had thoughts of transcending the dust of the world. At age ten, he became a novice under the Venerable Qiutan Yue, who had the master study various Confucian and Buddhist texts; the master was able to comprehend their purports and ideas. At fourteen, he tonsured his hair and received the complete precepts. At twenty, he called upon the Venerable Liaoran Yi, and his dynamic faculties were sparked and activated. Coming to Daochang in Huzhou, he met the Venerable Dongyang Hui; at the Twin Jing of Wulin, he met the Venerable Nanchu Shuo and the Venerable Guding Ming, none of whom failed to change their expressions and pay him respectful homage. He again consulted the Venerable Yuejiang Yin and the Venerable Yunwai Xiu, engaging with them in daily examinations and debates without an empty day. Next, he became closest with the Venerable Jueyin Cheng and the Venerable Xiaoyin Su, talking with them incessantly. He appeared in the world [as abbot] of the Pure Land Chan Monastery in Jinhua. Under the Great Ming, in the Hongwu era, decrees ordered him to reside as abbot at Nanhua in Shaozhou and Zhongzhu in Hangzhou, but he firmly declined and did not assume the posts. Later, he resided at Jingci, opening the hall to expound the Dharma, reviving what had deteriorated and raising what had been abandoned, yet in the end he suffered from false accusations. Suddenly he manifested illness and passed away. It was indeed on the eighth day of the eighth month. His worldly age was sixty-four, and his monastic age was fifty. His 'Poems of Mountain Dwelling' and recorded sayings from three assemblies have been transmitted to the world.
